Porcelain Inlays and Onlays – Conservative Restorative Treatment
Porcelain inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth affected by decay, fractures, or failing fillings. Crafted from dental ceramic, they are designed to support tooth strength and preserve healthy dental structure.
Inlays fit precisely within the grooves of a tooth, while onlays extend over one or more cusps to reinforce and protect weakened areas. Both options offer a conservative alternative to full crowns when appropriate.
Clinical Considerations
Porcelain inlays and onlays may help:
-
Support teeth compromised by decay, fractures, or large fillings
-
Contribute to maintaining dental morphology and alignment with surrounding teeth
-
Can help preserve more natural tooth structure than full crowns
-
Support a balanced bite and comfortable function
-
Designed to be long-lasting and resistant to stains
With proper oral hygiene and routine dental visits, inlays and onlays are intended to remain durable over time.
Treatment Process
Treatment typically involves two appointments. At the first visit, the tooth is numbed, and decay or old filling material is removed. The tooth is shaped to accommodate the restoration, and detailed digital impressions are taken and sent to the practice’s on-site laboratory for fabrication. A temporary restoration is placed to protect the tooth while the final inlay or onlay is made.
At the second visit, the finished restoration is evaluated for fit, contour, and color. It is then bonded to the tooth using high-strength adhesive, and minor adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable and balanced bite.
Post-Treatment Care
Patients receive guidance on maintaining oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and routine professional care, to support the long-term durability and function of the restoration.
Outcomes are individual and may vary according to each patient’s circumstances.
