Porcelain Fixed Bridges – Restorative Dental Treatment
A porcelain fixed bridge is a non-removable dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is crafted from high-strength dental ceramic and designed to support dental function and morphology.
A traditional porcelain bridge consists of two crowns placed on the healthy teeth adjacent to the gap (called abutment teeth). These crowns support the artificial tooth or teeth, known as pontics, which fill the space of the missing teeth. The bridge contributes to restoring chewing function and dental morphology.
Clinical Considerations
Porcelain bridges may help:
- Support chewing and speech function
- Preserve dental alignment by preventing adjacent teeth from shifting
- Maintain dental morphology in the area of missing teeth
- Provide a stable alternative to removable partial prostheses
With proper care, porcelain bridges are long-lasting and compatible with surrounding teeth.
Treatment Process
The procedure usually involves two appointments. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared under local anesthesia to accommodate the crowns. Digital impressions are taken and sent to the practice’s on-site laboratory, where the custom bridge is fabricated. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the teeth while the permanent restoration is prepared.
At the second visit, the custom bridge is evaluated for fit, shape, and color. Adjustments are made as needed, and the bridge is bonded securely in place.
Care and Follow-Up
After treatment, patients receive guidance on maintaining oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing around and beneath the bridge, and attending regular dental check-ups, to support long-term durability and oral health.
Outcomes are individual and may vary according to each patient’s circumstances.
